The drama department kicked off the year with Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) speech contest. They are currently practicing for state which is being held Feb.6th in Ankeny.
This is freshman Kristina Ryan's first time in speech contest.
"I'm really excited to see if I can make it to All-State," Ryan said.
On Jan. 12th senior Stephen Boatwright set up and attended a rally for lesbian, gay, transgender, allied (LGBTA) youth regarding the support of same sex marriage at the capitol.
The event was orginally hosted by anti-LGBTA organizations "LUV (Let Us Vote) Iowa" and the "IFPC" (Iowa Family Policy Center)", but supporters of same sex marriage and LGTB rights in general still showed up to both Boatwright's rally and one of Iowa's (the largest LGTB advocacy group in the Midwest) rally to prove their presence in our community.
The students in mock trial have a murder case in their hands. The students have to act as attorneys and witnesses. One of the advisors, Sarah hamilton, says that they have been learning the case since the beginning of the year.
"Mock Trial" is where students are given a legal case that they must act out," Hamilton said.
The students only have one competition, Mar. 1st. Hamilton says that the team researches the themes, learn the characters and work on asking the right questions.
"I think that we will do great; they've learned a lot since the beginning of the year," Hamilton said.
Since December is National HIV/AIDS awareness month, the Hoover-meredith Gay-Straight Alliance decided to set up a donation table Tuesday and Thursday during lunch that would raise money for the Aids Project of Central Iowa. They also had intended to have a speaker from the Project come to Hoover for an HIV/AIDS awareness assembly but had to cancel it due to weather. (12/18/09)
